TheThe Homestead Project is a bold initiative to create a self-sufficient, off-grid homestead using sustainable building techniques and regenerative agriculture. Our goal is to transform 20 acres of high-desert land into a thriving, eco-friendly space that serves as a model for sustainable living.
While we haven’t purchased the property yet, we are actively saving and planning to make this vision a reality. By sharing our journey, we hope to educate, inspire, and grow a community of like-minded individuals who believe in sustainable living and environmental stewardship.
The Vision: A Sustainable, Off-Grid Homestead
Creating a homestead in a high-desert climate comes with unique challenges, but with the sustainable building techniques we’ve successfully used in Mexico, and we are confident in our ability to design a self-sufficient, environmentally friendly space using these techniques.
1. Land & Soil Regeneration
To make the land fertile and resilient, we’ll focus on:
- Erosion control to protect the soil by using swales and other permaculture projects.
- Rainwater harvesting for irrigation and household use through water collection and recycling.
- Native plant integration to promote biodiversity and minimize water consumption.
2. Eco-Friendly Building & Natural Materials
We plan to build using the same sustainable techniques we’ve developed in Mexico, emphasizing passive solar design, natural insulation, and locally sourced materials like adobe and reclaimed wood. In Mexico we designed our houses with flat roofs. By using a flat roof we can have extra space for living and other necessities.
- Two 3,838 sq ft homes will serve as living and community spaces.
- Each home will have a matching underground root cellar for storage and workspace, using excavated soil to create handmade adobe bricks.
- Flat roofs will accommodate rainwater collection, solar panels, and additional outdoor living spaces.
3. Renewable Energy & Water Independence
- Solar power will provide electricity, allowing for true off-grid living.
- Rainwater harvesting and water conservation systems will ensure long-term sustainability.
4. Regenerative Agriculture & Sustainable Livestock Care
We will implement permaculture principles to establish a resilient food garden and design livestock housing using adobe, ensuring comfort, temperature control, and sustainability.
5. Zero-Waste Living & Recycling
- Composting and vermiculture will turn organic waste into valuable nutrients for the soil.
- A strong recycling system will help us minimize waste and repurpose materials.
6. Community Education & Knowledge Sharing
This homestead isn’t just for us—it will be a learning center for sustainable living. We plan to:
- Share our experiences through YouTube, online courses, and social media.
- Host workshops, seasonal camps, and internship programs to educate others.
- Give back to the community by donating surplus food and, eventually, creating local job opportunities.
