Welcome to the Homestead Project

The Homestead Project is an ambitious and sustainable initiative designed to transform 5 acres of high-desert land into a thriving, eco-friendly homestead. This space will embody self-sufficiency, regenerative agriculture, and off-grid living, serving as a model for sustainable living in harmony with the natural environment. Due to a lack of traditional financing, we’ve launched this crowdfunding campaign to raise the funds necessary to bring this vision to life, inviting you to help build a better world by supporting the creation of a sustainable homestead from the ground up.

Project Overview

This project involves meticulous planning, resource management, and innovative designs tailored to the unique challenges of high-desert living. The key components of the homestead include:

  • Land and Soil Development: Careful analysis of climate patterns, soil, and water availability will guide our land preparation, including erosion control, sustainable water management, and native plant integration to conserve soil and promote biodiversity.
  • Eco-Conscious Building: Our structures will prioritize passive solar design, eco-friendly materials, and natural insulation, creating efficient, comfortable spaces. We aim to build with materials like adobe and reclaimed wood, reducing environmental impact. Each of the two main houses—3,838 sq ft each—will serve distinct purposes. One house will be the main living and working space, and the other will be a guest house and community activity center. Each house will feature a root cellar of identical size (3,838 sq ft), located directly beneath it, using the same floor plan as the house above. This layout will maximize storage and utility, with stairwells connecting key rooms in the main and cellar levels to facilitate storage and workspace access. The main house will serve as our living space, with certain rooms converted into workspaces for various homesteading projects. Each room in the root cellar will be dedicated to storage or specific tasks supporting the homestead’s needs. The guest and community house will have several bedrooms for visitors, a communal kitchen, and dining area. Other rooms will be transformed into workshop and event spaces, designed to foster community learning and engagement. Both houses will feature flat roofs, allowing for eco-friendly additions such as water tanks, laundry areas, and even extra living spaces inspired by our experience with sustainable living in Mexico. While the blueprint we plan to purchase was designed for suburban living, we will adapt it to suit our homesteading needs. Excavated soil from the cellars will be used to create our own adobe bricks, supporting our goal to build sustainably and keep costs low. We’ll be doing much of the work ourselves, with the help of volunteers when possible, to further conserve resources and build community around the project.
  • Water Conservation and Renewable Energy: Rainwater harvesting systems and solar panels will be the backbone of our off-grid water and energy infrastructure, allowing us to operate independently while minimizing environmental impact.
  • Sustainable Agriculture and Livestock Integration: By employing permaculture principles, we’ll establish a resilient food garden and integrate livestock management practices that enrich the soil and ecosystem. Our livestock will live in adobe-style housing, which will regulate temperature and ensure comfort, hygiene, and aesthetic cohesion with the homestead.
  • Waste Reduction and Recycling: Composting, vermiculture, and a robust recycling system will help us achieve near-zero waste, turning organic materials into valuable resources for our gardens.
  • Community and Educational Outreach: This homestead will also serve as a learning hub, offering workshops, online courses, and community events to share knowledge and inspire others in sustainable living practices. We envision hosting seasonal camps, offering internship programs to aspiring students, and creating various community involvement opportunities. Surplus produce will be donated to local food banks, and as the homestead grows, we hope to offer small employment opportunities to local youth.
